I seriously think you still need to search a teacher if you can, even if it means travelling out a bit. Teaching yourself is fine and all that, but you need a teacher to really explain things and put you right when something isn't that clear. For reading I mean.

any recommendations ? i live in pineville north carolina, near charlotte. i have taken some lessons for playing purposes around here and usually the guys are not too good and is a waste of time. i guess i didnt explain myself too well before but i can play to most anything including island magic but would really like to be more exact with my playing through reading. i hope that makes sense??!! i would be willing to travel if anyone knows of somebody on at least the east cost or near.
Here's what i do in cases like that (besides studying the material):
extract the track to my computer to an mp3 file, then play it on media player and change the speed (one of the nicest features of WMP) to confort zone. then i'll be rising the speed of the track whenever it feels good.

Good idea on the WMP thing. I myself am not up to that level yet (not even to THINK about attempting to nail that incredible song), but I believe in the start slow and then bring it up to speed method.
Although, back when Neil Peart's YYZ solo from ESL was out I didn't have the capability of slowing things down, so my ears got an immense workout trying to figure out all the nuances. Though I still can't do the interplay between the timbales and the high concert toms.
They used to use Island Magic as background musing during certain NBA games, can't remember specifics, tho. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

have you seen dave play island magic on his instruction video? he plays the back beat on 3 and 7 on there. different from the master plan album. i could send you a clip if you want. it might help watching him play the song rather than just hearing or reading it.
